What if I could grant you a business super power that would turbo charge your ability to get results and would set you apart from your competition? What if this power also helped future proof your career? Would you be interested? What is this magical super power? Data literacy!
What is data literacy? In the context of business, it’s the ability of employees to use data to extract insights and apply those insights to strategy, with the ultimate goal being better business performance. The organization power of data literacy is when employees have the data they need at their fingertips and know how to use it. While many factors will impact organizational data literacy, the most important factor is a culture that values fact based decision making (vs a purely “gut feel” based approach). Many companies, in their desire to become more fact based and data driven, think that if they just make more data available that people will use it. The reality is that even with all this data, very few people in most companies know how to make sense of it. The reason? A majority of today’s work force is data illiterate. This gap leaves a majority of data’s potential sitting on the sidelines. Leading edge companies are investing heavily in data literacy as it enables fact based decision making and also empowers teams with the knowledge needed to make new discoveries. The great news is that data literacy is a skill anyone can develop with some practice. We have created a series of posts outlining a framework for individuals & organizations to develop this critical 21st century skill. Having leveraged this approach across numerous companies, we are confident you will find it useful.
